The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has implemented a new pilot project in which it places unclaimed property from its lost and found on eBay, allowing the items to be available to the highest bidder.

The TTC, which estimates that about 44,000 items a year are left on trains, buses and in stations, puts an item on eBay if it has not been claimed within 90 days of its retrieval.

Since 1988, the TTC has made approximately $23,000 a year selling lost articles out of a station office, but officials said they expect this new policy to increase that total.

“This one-year pilot project will make buying unclaimed lost articles much more convenient for people — anytime of the day or the year,” said Victor Buttigieg, lost articles supervisor.
