San Antonio took a significant step toward modernizing its public transit system with the ceremonial groundbreaking of the VIA Rapid Green Line, the city’s first Advanced Rapid Transit (ART) corridor.
The event marked the official start of construction for the 10.35-mile route that will reshape mobility across the region.
Construction Begins This Summer
Construction is set to begin in late July, starting with utility relocation and initial grade-level work.
The Green Line will run from Isom Road near the San Antonio International Airport, down San Pedro Avenue, through Downtown, and south to Steves Avenue, with continuing service to the Brooks Transit Center. Service is scheduled to launch in early 2028.
“This project is part of our commitment to deliver what San Antonians have asked for: better, more reliable, and more frequent service,” said VIA President/CEO Jon Gary Herrera. “The Green Line will connect people to opportunity, with the highest frequency and most reliable service we’ve ever offered.”
The Green Line will operate 21 hours a day with 10-minute weekday frequency and 15-minute weekend frequency, providing consistent and convenient access to jobs, neighborhoods, businesses, and key destinations, including the city’s historic missions and airport.
Community-Driven and Future-Ready
The Green Line is a flagship project of the Keep San Antonio Moving plan, overwhelmingly approved by voters in 2020.
The plan is partly supported by a one-eighth-cent sales tax VIA will begin receiving in 2026. It represents a long-term investment in sustainable, modern, and equitable transit solutions for the region.
VIA will build the Green Line in phases and provide at least 30 days’ notice before work begins in each segment. To minimize disruptions, the agency pledged to maintain open communication with residents and businesses throughout the corridor.
Initial construction will begin in two areas: U.S. Highway 281 and Isom Road, and Roosevelt Avenue and Steves Avenue.
