Swiss engineers linked Europe’s north and south this week by completing drilling for the world’s longest overland tunnel, which will accommodate trains from Germany to the Swiss Alps.
The 21-mile Loetschberg tunnel, set to open in 2007, will become the world’s third longest tunnel overall, behind two underwater Japanese tunnels.
Upon completion, the tunnel will allow passenger trains to travel through at more than 150 mph.
