Former MBTA chief: System fix, expansion 'tall order'

BOSTON — Former state transportation chief Richard Davey believes extending commuter rail service to the South Coast and fixing the beleaguered Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) system without raising new taxes is a "tall order," according to a Taunton Daily Gazette report.
The South Coast Rail project is an estimated $2.2 billion commuter rail extension that would stretch from Boston to Taunton, Fall River and New Bedford. The MBTA this winter was unable to deliver basic services in the face of heavy snowfall and the transit authority is now facing an extensive review, with policymakers eyeing solutions to prevent a repeat of the scenario next winter and to improve system performance.
