SAN FRANCISCO — The San Jose Mercury reported that Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) workers will vote on Tuesday on whether to give union management the authority it needs to call a strike if its contract expires at the end of the month.

BART officials told the paper the agency is working with regional transportation officials on backup plans if it needs to shut down trains, including operating extra bus service.
