WASHINGTON, D.C. — Twenty train and bus operators were fired by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) last year for violating the agency's alcohol and drug abuse policy, as well as its cellphone policy, NBC News4 reported.

Eleven bus operators and three train operators were terminated for violating the alcohol and drug abuse policy in 2016, while five bus operators and one train operator also were fired for violating the agency's cellphone policy, according to the report.

The agency has had a zero-tolerance policy for using a cellphone while on the job since 2009, but its drug and alcohol abuse policy allows for multiple violations before an employee can be fired, NBC's News4 reported.
